Alfa Romeo's design has resonated once again with readers of Germany’s renowned car magazine ‘Auto Motor Und Sport’. In this year’s edition of the annual ‘Autonis’ awards, readers named Alfa Romeo ‘Design Brand of the Year’ while the award for the ‘Large SUV’ category went to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. In addition, the high performance variant of the SUV, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, recently claimed the title of world's fastest production SUV, setting a new benchmark lap time at Germany's legendary Nürburgring. This is the latest achievement in the racing tradition of the Quadrifoglio in over a century of Alfa Romeo history.

In this, the 17th edition of the ‘Autonis’ awards, 16,602 ‘Auto, Motor Und Sport’ readers cast their votes in ten categories. More than half of the votes (50.5 per cent) went to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, crowning it the winner of the ‘Large SUV’ category. Alfa Romeo also won the ‘Design Brand of the Year’ award for the second year in a row, receiving 27 per cent of the votes.

Commenting on the award, Rhett Maxwell, the GM of Dhofar Automotive said, “Alfa Romeo is a brand that has always been associated with heritage, speed, and beauty, making them the highest expression of Italian style in the automotive world. The simple fact that the Alfa Romeo Brand has been recognised by German car enthusiasts as the leading design for two years in a row while the Stelvio, the very first SUV in Alfa Romeo's history, also won its category, is a testament to the skill and talents of the design teams.”

In addition to the ‘Autonis’ award, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which is expected to be coming to the Sultanate in Q2 2018, lapped the 12.9-mile Nordschleife (North Loop) in a record 7 minutes 51.7 seconds. This new benchmark time is a full eight seconds faster than the previous production SUV record.

The Stelvio Quadrifoglio record was set by Fabio Francia - the same driver who also set the track record for the fastest four-door sedan in the world on the Nürburgring with the Giulia Quadrifoglio in a time of just 7 minutes and 32 seconds.

The first SUV in the more than a century-long history of the brand, Stelvio embodies the true authentic Alfa Romeo spirit - distinctive Italian style, state-of-the-art and innovative engines, perfect weight distribution, unique technical solutions, and excellent weight-to-power ratio,” said Rhett.

“Furthermore, where other SUVs stop at utility, with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, Alfa Romeo took on the challenge to create the perfect mix of high performance, authentically sporty driving dynamics, Italian style, and engineering technology, together with the comfort and roominess features which are typical of this segment. This record, together with the design awards are a clear indication that at Alfa Romeo is well and truly on the right track and that the Stelvio Quadrifoglio will be a sure-fire hit with performance enthusiasts across the country when it enters our market next year,” he added.

In true Alfa Romeo tradition, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio delivers impeccable handling, worthy of a real sports car, proven by balanced weight distribution, the most direct steering ratio in the segment and state-of-the-art suspension with the exclusive ‘Alfalink’ technology. Not to mention the lavish use of ultra-lightweight, hi-tech materials. What's more, for the ultimate in road-holding, the Stelvio SUV offers the Alfa Romeo Q4 all-wheel drive system, and can be equipped with mechanical self-locking rear differential on request. The new SUV is powered as standard by an all-aluminium, 2.0-litre, direct-injection turbo engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission, delivering a class-leading, standard 280 horsepower and 306 lb.-ft. of torque and offering best in class 0 to 100 km/h acceleration of just 5.7 seconds.

More than just performance and handling, the car has plenty of room available for passengers. It even provides a wide-ranging list of standard features, including18-inch aluminium wheels (available 19- and 20-inch wheels), leather seating, backup camera with rear park sensors, power lift gate, Formula One-inspired flat-bottom steering wheel with integrated push button start and much more.

However, it is the upcoming flagship Stelvio Quadrifoglio model, which will join the Oman market in Q2 2018, which highlights Alfa Romeo’s true performance and motorsport pedigree as the halo model in the line-up. Powered by the same all-aluminium, direct-injection 2.9-litre 24-valve bi-turbo intercooled V6 engine, as is used in the Giulia Quadrifoglio, the performance SUV delivers a best-in-class 505 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque.
