Volkswagen & Clean Up Oman Partner for Clean the Beach

More than 100 volunteers clean litter from Athaibah beach
Programme in line with Volkswagen global ‘Think Blue’ philosophy

Over 100 volunteers joined Wattayah Motors, the official dealer for Volkswagen in Oman, last weekend, to lend their support to the Volkswagen ‘Clean the Beach’ campaign. The environmental awareness initiative, which is in association with Clean Up Oman, took place at one of Muscat’s most beautiful beaches, the Athaibah beach. Volunteers from the local community came together to do their part and raise awareness of the need to eliminate litter from Oman’s beaches in an effort to preserve the local environment and wildlife.

Hemant Bhat, General Manager of Volkswagen Oman, said: “Initiatives such as ‘Clean the Beach’ form a crucial part of Volkswagen’s ‘Think Blue’ campaign which encourages people to undertake small initiatives in everyday life to reduce the impact of their everyday lives on the environment. In a country as beautiful and abundant as the Sultanate, it forms a part of the brand’s wider responsibility to contribute towards the preservation of our environment. We hope that the awareness generated by the ‘Clean the Beach’ campaign will help us to achieve the goal of zero litter on our beautiful beaches.”

Through the ‘Clean the Beach’ campaign, Volkswagen in Oman aims to educate and raise public awareness of the need to protect the Sultanate’s many and varied habitats and the wildlife that depends on them. With a coastline of 1700km, Oman offers some of the most stunning beaches in the region. However, with increasing visitors to the area, these coastal regions have become collecting spots for litter and debris which can be harmful and even fatal, to all manners of marine wildlife.

Volunteers included Volkswagen customers, staff from Wattayah Motors, college students from the HTC (Higher College of Technologies), Pratheeksha Oman, as well as numerous individual volunteers.

Naji Zeitouni, Volkswagen Oman said: “Such worthy efforts from the volunteers are commendable and remind us all of our collective sense of responsibility towards the environmental health of our society. In line with the Volkswagen ‘Think Blue’ ethos, we are proud to help rid Muscat’s beaches of recklessly dumped litter.”

‘Think Blue’ is Volkswagen’s way of taking responsibility for their role in the environment and creating remedies for existing problems. The initiative aims to create a fun driving experience that is also environmentally conscious by introducing new technology that greatly increases fuel efficiency and reduces C02 emissions.
